November has become crypto’s most consequential month. In three straight years, November delivered events that reshaped the industry: a catastrophic exchange collapse in 2022, a landmark criminal settlement in 2023, and a market-moving election result in 2024. Each one hit differently, but together they tell the story of how crypto has changed.
November 2022: FTX Collapses and Shakes the Industry
In November 2022, FTX, once one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, imploded almost overnight. Customers could not withdraw their funds. Billions of dollars in customer deposits had gone missing. The exchange filed for bankruptcy within days. For related coverage, see Binance Reopens Bitcoin Withdrawals After Reported $6.3B Hack.
Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, was later convicted by the U.S. Department of Justice on charges of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. The collapse wiped out billions in customer funds and triggered a crisis of confidence across the entire crypto industry. For anyone who held money on a crypto exchange, November 2022 was a warning. It showed that even large, well-known platforms could fail, and that customer funds were not always safe. The FTX bankruptcy proceedings were managed through a dedicated restructuring process aimed at recovering assets for creditors.
The damage went beyond FTX itself. Other platforms that had exposure to FTX or its sister trading firm Alameda Research faced their own crises. Trust in centralized crypto exchanges fell sharply. Regulators in the U.S. and globally took notice.
November 2023: Binance Pays $4.3 Billion and CZ Steps Down
Exactly one year later, November delivered another defining moment. This time it was not a sudden collapse but a negotiated reckoning. Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume, agreed to plead guilty and pay over $4.3 billion to resolve a U.S. Department of Justice investigation. It was one of the largest corporate criminal penalties in history.
As part of the resolution, Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, stepped down as CEO of Binance. CZ had built Binance into the dominant force in global crypto trading. His departure marked a generational leadership shift at the company.
The contrast with 2022 matters. FTX was a sudden failure driven by alleged fraud. The Binance settlement was a structured legal process, with the exchange remaining operational under new leadership and tighter compliance oversight. Binance continued to serve users, but under fundamentally different conditions. For context on Binance’s ongoing challenges, reports of a separate $6.3 billion breach surfaced later, adding further scrutiny to the exchange.
For a regular crypto holder, the Binance settlement meant that the platform they likely used to buy or trade crypto was now operating under direct U.S. government oversight. It was a significant shift from the regulatory gray zone that had defined crypto exchanges for years.
November 2024: Trump Wins and Bitcoin Runs
November 2024 brought a different kind of shock: a positive one for crypto markets. Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election, and Bitcoin responded with a sharp rally. Trump had positioned himself as a pro-crypto candidate throughout the campaign, and markets priced in that shift immediately.
The move reflected how much the regulatory environment had become a price driver for Bitcoin. After two Novembers defined by enforcement and collapse, the prospect of a friendlier regulatory stance sent Bitcoin climbing. The rally drew in both existing holders and new buyers who had been watching from the sidelines.
The 2024 move also showed how Bitcoin’s narrative had shifted. In 2022, the story was contagion and counterparty risk. In 2023, it was compliance and institutional accountability. By 2024, the story had become about political tailwinds and the possibility of clearer rules that could bring larger institutional capital into the market. Developments around Binance during this period, including Trump’s own public comments on Binance, underscored how political and crypto narratives had become intertwined.
For someone holding a small amount of Bitcoin on an exchange, the 2024 November rally was a reminder that crypto prices respond to political events just as traditional markets do, sometimes more sharply.
What Three Novembers Tell Us
Taken together, these three Novembers trace a clear arc. Collapse, then accountability, then optimism. Each year the catalyst was different: a fraud, a settlement, an election result. But each one reset expectations for what crypto could be and who it was for.
The pattern also shows that crypto is no longer operating in isolation. It is tied to legal systems, political outcomes, and regulatory decisions in ways it was not five years ago. That is not a bad thing for most people who hold crypto. It means the industry is maturing, even when that process is painful. Broader banking scrutiny of crypto, such as payment restrictions from traditional banks, reflects the same shift toward a more regulated environment.
If you hold crypto, the lesson from three straight Novembers is simple: the biggest moves, up and down, tend to come from events outside the blockchain itself. Knowing what is happening in courts, in Washington, and in executive suites matters as much as watching price charts.
