Binance.US and Blockchain.com have reportedly filed with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), seeking regulatory approval to offer prediction markets in the United States. The filings mark a significant regulatory step for both companies, though no approval has been granted and no product has launched.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Binance.US and Blockchain.com have reportedly filed with the CFTC seeking approval to offer prediction markets.
- Filing with the CFTC is a regulatory requirement, not an approval — no prediction market product has been authorized or launched.
- The CFTC oversees designated contract markets (DCMs) in the U.S., and any approval decision or timeline has not been confirmed in the reported information.
Binance.US and Blockchain.com File With the CFTC
Both Binance.US, the American arm of the world’s largest crypto exchange, and Blockchain.com, one of the oldest crypto wallet and exchange platforms, have reportedly filed with the CFTC to offer prediction markets. These are platforms where users can bet on the outcome of real-world events, such as elections or economic data releases, using financial contracts. A prediction market is a type of contract where participants buy and sell positions based on whether a specific future event will happen. The price of each contract reflects the crowd’s collective expectation of that outcome occurring. For related coverage, see Binance News Today: DOJ Reviews 2023 Settlement.
Filing with the CFTC is a necessary first step, not a green light. The agency regulates derivatives markets in the U.S., including futures contracts and event-based products. Any company wanting to offer these instruments legally must apply for designation as a registered exchange, known as a Designated Contract Market (DCM). For related coverage, see Kentucky Sues Kalshi and Polymarket in CFTC Authority Test.
This regulatory pathway is the same one that platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket have navigated. Kentucky recently sued Kalshi and Polymarket in a case that tested the boundaries of CFTC authority over prediction markets, highlighting how contested this space remains in the U.S.
What Approval Could Mean for Prediction Markets
If the CFTC grants approval, both companies could offer legally compliant prediction market products to U.S. customers. That would place them in a growing but legally complex segment of the financial markets, one that regulators have scrutinized closely.
The key word is “if.” The research confirms the reported action is a filing, a request for regulatory permission, not a completed approval or a live product. No timeline for a CFTC decision, no product specifications, and no company statements are contained in the available information.
For everyday crypto users, a CFTC-approved prediction market from a major platform like Binance.US could mean more accessible, regulated ways to engage with event-based contracts. Currently, many prediction market platforms operate in legal grey areas or are restricted to non-U.S. users.
Binance has been navigating its own regulatory landscape in recent years. The U.S. Department of Justice has scrutinized Binance’s 2023 settlement compliance, and separately, Binance’s EU MiCA license application has faced potential rejection. A successful CFTC filing for Binance.US would represent a different regulatory direction, one focused on obtaining proactive authorization rather than responding to enforcement.
What to Watch Next
The most important development to monitor is whether the CFTC responds to either filing with a decision, a request for additional information, or a public comment period. The agency’s DCM application process is public, meaning stakeholders can weigh in before approval is granted or denied.
Watch for either company to announce approved product details or availability dates. Until that happens, these filings remain applications only. No regulatory outcome is confirmed in the information currently available.
It is also worth watching whether other major exchanges follow with similar filings. If Binance.US and Blockchain.com are among the first large crypto platforms to pursue this route formally, others may follow depending on how the CFTC responds.
For anyone new to crypto, the practical takeaway is straightforward: this story is about paperwork, not a product launch. Two well-known crypto companies have asked a U.S. regulator for permission to offer a new type of financial product. That permission has not been granted. If and when it is, that will be the moment when something changes for users.
