Binance and Coinbase have joined a law enforcement crackdown targeting scam operations in West Africa, with authorities reporting 28 arrests as part of the operation. The involvement of two of the world’s largest crypto exchanges marks a notable step in cross-border efforts to tackle cryptocurrency-linked fraud.

How Binance and Coinbase fit into the operation
Both Binance and Coinbase reportedly joined the crackdown. Large crypto exchanges can support law enforcement investigations through formal compliance processes, which typically include responding to lawful data requests and flagging suspicious account activity.
Binance has faced scrutiny over its own compliance record in recent years. The DOJ has monitored Binance’s adherence to its 2023 settlement, which required the exchange to strengthen its anti-money-laundering controls. Cooperation in a case like this West Africa operation would align with those obligations.
Coinbase has also navigated a complex regulatory environment. The exchange was previously blocked by Taiwan over separate compliance concerns, illustrating how exchanges operating globally must manage varying legal requirements across jurisdictions.
The specific roles Binance and Coinbase played in this operation, such as whether they provided transaction data, froze accounts, or assisted with tracing funds, have not been confirmed. Those details would require official disclosure from the exchanges or the investigating agencies.
What the arrests mean for crypto scam enforcement
Exchange cooperation in scam investigations is becoming a more visible part of crypto crime enforcement. When exchanges work alongside law enforcement, investigators can potentially trace funds moved through centralized platforms, identify account holders, and build cases against networks that use crypto to move illicit proceeds.
Regulatory pressure on exchanges like Binance has pushed the industry toward stronger compliance infrastructure. The DOJ’s ongoing review of Binance’s 2023 settlement reflects how regulators are holding exchanges accountable for the activity that flows through their platforms.
For ordinary crypto holders, this kind of enforcement action is a reminder that centralized exchanges are not anonymous. Exchanges hold identity information and transaction records that can be shared with law enforcement under appropriate legal processes.
